On a much-needed visit to a hot new spa I had already envisioned the upcoming relaxation from my hour-long massage – a treat I rarely indulge in. I was so eager that I arrived an hour early, knowing there would be a lounge to read in (really it’s to "people watch" but I’ll stick to calling it "reading").
While touring the spa I saw a "water art" area where using just water and a brush, on a stone-like canvas, you could channel your inner Matisse. I instinctively chuckled while passing the rows of spa-robe clad women painting away – without paint. It was a little bit kindergarten-meets-insane-asylum. But half an hour into my wait and I was one of them. Water brush in hand, I initially started with a brush stroke here and there and worked my way up to flowers and my own version of abstract art.
"We’re ready for you"…"Well I’m not ready!" I nearly yelled out, apparently I had channeled my inner child. The massage was everything I wanted it to be but it was the water art that stayed with me.
Sure we’ve all spent time on arts and crafts with the kids, but how many of us have spent time on arts and crafts for ourselves? What might seem as a ridiculous "un-adult" activity at first can actually be one of the best things for moms, working girls, and just about anyone who isn’t at the spa every day. The belief that "fun" is just for kids is a self-deprecating one, because who’s taking care of those kids, a stressed-out and over-worked woman?
Kathy Freston, a spiritual counselor and best-selling author of several living better books suggests that you make time each day for just a little bit of fun. Whether it’s an hour or just 15 minutes, whatever you can spare, there should be some time to let loose and live like a kid, preferably without the kids. This personal fun time will reduce your stress and relax your mind and it doesn’t have to be complicated, time-consuming, or expensive. Just have a canvas ready and start doodling with crayons, a paint brush or anything you like. Make your own jewelry by buying some beads and a guide book, or a kit – you can buy the ones for kids, no one will know! Whatever you choose to do, make sure it’s handy and part of your routine.
