Just Add Pillow

By Pegah Aarabi

Do you suffer from floral couch syndrome? It’s a rare disease that inflicts even the most stylish women who have let their homes go amidst everyday responsibilities. There is an easy cure for this rare condition and it’s easier than you’d think: just add pillow, and maybe some candles too.

Whoever told you that the only way you could update your home was to throw everything away was probably a furniture salesman. Home accents are the quickest and cheapest way to update your home’s style. Even a floral couch can be modernized by picking just one hue from the existing print and adding accents like velvet or leather pillows, a modern rug in a neutral color with touches of that same hue, and candles and candle holders in a lighter version of that hue (silver also does wonders). If you’re willing to spend a little more you can add chairs in a solid color to either match or offset the print.

Look through home magazines or think of homes that you’ve visited to decide how you want to update your home. If you want a more modern look choose artsy pieces that are often a bit more pricey but will add instant architectural design to your home. Think chrome statues, shells, misshapen glass vases, and ceramic or metallic balls in a glass bowl. Don’t be restricted by the existing furniture, you might be amazed by how quickly your whole home can turn around with a few modern accents.

If you want to go for a classic style, look for antique items like bronze statues, Tiffany-style lamps, and Persian or Oriental carpets (replicas are wallet friendlier). Look through your own storage items to see if anything can be brought back to life, and keep an eye out for antique shows and sales.

Once you have your accessories in place, and your home updated, you can opt for a fresh paint colour to complete the transformation. By choosing the accessories first you can let them guide which colour you choose, in general neutral and gold tones are more classic while bright colours are modern. Another case of floral couch syndrome cured!
