Eco Options

It's getting easier and easier to find eco-friendly fashions. From mainstream chains like MEC to boutique labels such as Passenger Pigeon; organic cottons, bamboos, hemp fabrics, sustainable practices and more, are becoming mainstream.

But what to do when your body shape is changing rapidly to accommodate a second person in your belly? After about 12 weeks, your old clothes aren't going to fit anymore. But is it asking too much to find something that's well-fitting, flattering, comfortable AND eco-friendly?

Fear not – in recent years, many maternity designers have taken up the eco-friendly mantle. Consider Boob Maternity, a gorgeous line out of Sweden that makes fashionable and bright pieces out of organic cotton (available in Canada online at Haute Mama). There's also the oh-so-pretty items at Jessica Scott, such as this amazing Three In One piece that can extend your wardrobe in many funky ways.

You can also simply consider extending your wardrobe by going up a size or two (until you reach the very end of your pregnancy, when nothing's going to fit anyway!) in regular non-maternity clothes, such as this splendid organic and wallet-friendly Mountain Equipment Co-Op tee; or these gorgeous Roots Green tops in organic cotton. Bonus: these pieces will fit after baby arrives and while you're working to get back into your pre-pregnancy jeans - useful on both ends!

And because you know there are plenty of mamas just like you looking for eco-friendly gear, once you're done with your maternity clothes it's a great idea to re-sell them at your local hip consignment store – recycle!
